On 7 January 2012, a ceremony was organized in Podrute, Croatia, to commemorate the death of five European observers, killed in helicopter shot down over Yugoslavia in 1992.

Although the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty changed in some aspects the institutional framework of the EU, as well as limited the formal role of the national presidency in CSDP, the example of the Polish Presidency showed that there was still a vast room for maneuver to provide the EU institutions with strategic directions on CSDP and to be active in this field.
